Electric Charge and Static Electricity

The existence of electric charge is based on the protons and electrons in the atom. The amount of charge on a single proton is equal to the amount of charge possessed by a single electron.

A proton and an electron have an equal amount but an opposite type (sign) of charge. Proton positve (+), electron negative (-). Thus, if an atom contains equal numbers of protons and electrons, the atom is described as being electrically neutral. On the other hand, if an atom has an unequal number of protons and electrons, then the atom is electrically charged (and in fact, is then referred to as an ion rather than an atom).

Any atom which contains less electrons than protons is said to be positively charged. Conversely, any atom which contains more electrons than protons is said to be negatively charged.

-Neutral or uncharged atom--Equal numbers of protons and electrons (p=e)
-Positively Charged Ion--Possesses more protons than electrons (Neutral atom lost electrons)
-Negatively Charged Ion--Possesses more electrons than protons (Neutral atom gained electrons)

The process of an electron leaving one material and moving to reside in another object is a common occurence. As clothes tumble in the dryer, electrons are leaving one bit of clothing and going to another. The object that loses the electrons will become positive, and the one that gains the electrons becomes negative.

When two dissimilar materials are rubbed together (friction) charges can build up in both materials. These charges are called electrostatic charges. Anyone who has felt the "zap" of an electric spark after walking across a carpet and then touching a metal door knob has experienced the effect of two objects rubbing together to create electrostatic charges.

These static charges can be useful, or a nuisance. They can even be downright dangerous. Watch the video clip below, and comment on what you see. (Post a comment on the blog by clicking the comment button at the end of this post)

What caused the dangerous event shown in the video?

In Radiography, electrostatic charges are sometimes discharged when the technologist handles the film before processing.

WOW!! although this video shows the dangers of electrostatic charges, I still find it extremely funny!!! Its crazy how friction can cause such a reaction.

I know she lost her eyebrows lol... the most that happens to me is getting shocked or my hair stands on ends but to cause a fire at a gas station!!! her reaction was really calm.

I was shocked at her reaction as well. She actually stood there and made several attempts to take the pump out of the tank.

I would have been running as far away from that car as possible.

This video just illustrates that static electricity is real, and dangerous.

I'm wondering where did she go after her gas pump went on fire? lol
I thought her car was going to blow up for a second.

I thought that it was very interesting, to see how a small amount of friction can cause such a big problem,,,

she was very lucky guys:i've experience static shock,it can be sometimes painful and actual see the sparks. At least from video shows how electrons can be tranfer from one material to the other without realising it.
Question:is electricstatic shock more common during the cold weather?

I'm just wondering, why did she touched the pump again knowing that its on fire. Is her car that important to risk her life by removing the gas pump. I mean, this isn't the first time this had happen. A couple of days ago, the news showed the same thing about a guy putting gas on his car but the gas pump did not just lit up like in the video. The car actually exploded. So as you can see, She was actually lucky this time, maybe not the next time.

OMG i cant believe she stood their and try to put the fire, maybe if she wasn't playing with her shirt and causing all that friction she wouldn't have that scare.if that was shawnette she would go up in flames because of all the hair spray and hair jell.lol

lol u got jokes chyda... ha ha... Abdul I think static electricity does happen more frequently in the winter due to the dry weather. Electron tend to move around freely when the air is dry and also stick around longer, until they find a conductor. Its good to use a humidifier to moisten the air which lessens electric static.

Did she have the car running? Isnt that why they ask you to turn your ignition off at the pump?

Iristh3Virus said...

Did this happen because she left the car on? I mean in Jersey we aren't allowed to pump our own gas but I still need to worry about the people who pump the gas for me. I leave my car all the time. Now I know!

Turning your ignition off will not prevent static electricity.

The spark that ignited was based on static discharge and would have happened even with the engine turned off.

What were the two dissimilar items rubbing together to cause friction? Was it the gas pump nozzle and the gas tank or was it because she kept rubbing and adjusting her sweater? It looked like she rubbed on her sweater both times before she touched the pump.
